Alan is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a Fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation, and was a charter member of the I’Anson-Hoffman American Inn of Court and of the Boyd-Graves Conference of the Virginia Bar Association, having served as Chair from 1997 to 1999. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Virginia Super Lawyers, and Virginia’s Best Lawyers. Best Lawyers named him Norfolk Virginia’s Lawyer of the Year – Personal Injury Litigation (Defendants) in 2014, 2019, and 2024. He has also been selected by his peers as a member of Virginia’s Legal Elite for Alternative Dispute Resolution (mediation and arbitration). In 2019, the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association awarded Alan with the prestigious Eggleston/I’Anson Professionalism Award. The Virginia Trial Lawyers Association selected Alan as the recipient of their annual Civility and Professionalism Award in 2022.
Alan is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association, and the Virginia Beach Bar Association.
He has served as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Randolph-Macon College and was an adjunct professor of insurance law at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, College of William and Mary. He is co-author of the Virginia Insurance Case Finder, Third Edition, published by Lexis-Nexis Publishing Co. Alan’s practice is largely devoted to working as a mediator and arbitrator in all types of civil cases and insurance disputes.
